College and Career Bound Program
Kids R First also has a College and Career Bound Program that provides funds for students with financial need at local high schools. A special fund monitored by counselors is used for SAT tutorial courses, college application fees, TOEFL test fees, incentive based academic achievement awards, and other discretionary assistance for needy students. Many needy students who are often the first within their family to consider attending college or train for careers have numerous obstacles. Financially, parents of these students can barely meet the demands of providing the basic necessities of rent, food, and clothing for their families. Therefore, it is not an option for these students to ask their parents to pay for any extra expenses that might be incurred in pursuit of their higher education. Kids R First saw the potential to help these students. High school counselors have available various financial resources that help these students as they are planning their future. When there is no other means of assistance, the Kids R First College and Career Bound Program fund has been designed to help fill this void. Examples include, paying for SAT tutorial courses, college application and TOEFL test fees and leadership training events. To meet other needs of students, counselors have used Kids R First funds to provide sports physicals, soccer shoes, summer school registration fees, special materials for ESOL students, and recognition ceremonies for most-improved students. Many of these expenditures have benefited students who might have been overlooked for worthwhile activities due to lack of funds. |
